BETWEEN LACK OF EMOTION AND THE INABILITY TO EXPRESS EMOTION
ICD-10 attempts to describe
the schizoid’s lack of emotion by the following personality traits:
---emotional coldness
--- inability
to express feelings
--- indifference
to praise or criticism.
High-level schizoids display
a true lack of emotion.
They do not express emotion
because they cannot feel that emotion.
In fact, they exhibit apathy,
and have no motivation.
Motivation is driven by
emotion – when there is no emotion, there will be no motivation.
Mikel
describes it this way, ‘the engine fails to fire because it lacks the spark of
emotion’.
Moving down the schizoid
scale towards the medium-level,
the
first signs of emotion become apparent …..
At this level, although they
may experience some emotion, they are often unable to express that emotion ...
Nevertheless, they do
experience emotion, and may even express it under certain conditions.
In addition, they have the
motivation to work on projects they find satisfying …..
Thus, the apathy present in
the high-level schizoid, is absent in the medium-level schizoid.
Schizoids range between
experiencing NO true emotion,
and an
inability to express emotion ... but
wherever
the person falls on the schizoid scale, he/she will never be able to experience
a full,
free
and happy
emotional life.
